Road signalman fatally hit by a vehicle in Sainte-Clotilde-de-Châteauguay

The CNESST is today making public the conclusions of its investigation into the industrial accident that claimed the life of a road signaller on October 8, 2019, in Sainte-Clotilde-de-Châteauguay.

Chronology of the accident

The day of the accident, backfilling of the shoulder and profiling of the ditch was underway at the corner of Chemin de la Rivière and Montée Pion. Three road marshals alternated in directing local traffic while a dump truck carried out work to unload granular material at the job site. Early in the afternoon, the driver of the truck was told to move. As he was preparing his backing maneuver, the signaller left his position and headed for the center of the intersection. The driver, believing to perceive a signal to reverse from it, began his maneuver. The worker, who then ended up in the blind spot of the truck, was struck and crushed by the rear wheels. Help was called to the scene and the worker was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Causes of the accident

The investigation enabled the CNESST to identify two causes to explain the accident:

  • The worker was run over while moving around the job site and was in the backing path of the dump truck.
  • The training, the experience and supervision of the worker was insufficient and did not ensure that he had the knowledge required to perform his job as a traffic signaller safely.
